10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU

March 24, 2008 was the first anniversary of the NSW state election.  To mark the occasion, State Political reporter Lisa Carty asked Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell and Premier Morris Iemma to nominate the 10 things they hate about each other.

Spin is favoured over substance and results:  Once the headlines have gone, so has your motivation for taking action.

(1) So Negative:

Your first response is to criticise, never acknowledging the great work that gets done in our schools, hospitals and communities, and never putting forward a constructive solution when there are problems to fix.

(2) Project mismanagement:

Hundreds of millions taxpayer’s dollars are being wasted through bungled projects such as the $100 million Tcard debacle, scrapped after 10 years.

(2) No Policies:

You don’t have any ideas for improved transport, health services, education, housing, disabilities or mental health.

(3) Dishonesty:

Before the election you said you wouldn’t widen the spit Bridge; we’d have a Tcard, and a CBD rail link incorporating a second harbour crossing

(3) Out Of Touch:

You and your colleagues never fight for the best interests of NSW’s hard working families.

(4)

The stench of corruption hangs over you and your Government.  State Governments departments have become the Centrelink for Labor Mates.

(4) Laziness:

You and your team don’t intend to engage the Government until at least 2 years into this electoral cycle yet the taxpayers are paying or your salaries.

(5) Transport Shambles:

After 2 Harbour Bridge train breakdowns commuters still don’t have the commuter charter you promised.  Every transport infrastructure project is running late, over budget or both.

(5) No accountability:

Your Opposition went to the election with $29 million in promises and no way to pay for it

(6) No Accountability or Responsibility:

You have failed to implement any standards in you Ministry.  Your Ministers don’t have to add value to public assets, improve services or implement  new and innovative programs.

(6) No Leadership:

You fight among yourselves and no leader has been able to stamp out the for-right extremism.

(7)

Health/DOCS and other portfolios have been given to Reba Meagher got her job because she was a mate, not because of her experience.  The number of children known to DOCS who die continues to rise.

(7) No Responsibility:

You’ve failed to even put forward a position on one of the most fundamental issues NSW faces - providing enough electricity for growth.

(8) Desalination Plant

When it rains, millions of litres of water run out to the ocean instead of being harvested for recycling and reuse.

(8)  No Morals:

Your side is happy to attack frontline workers - nurses, teachers and police, in your bid to launch political attacks on the Government.

(9)

Speculation over whether you will see out this term is highlighted by your lack of energy in tackling the state’s problems.

(9) No Memory:

The last Coalition Government was a shambles, presiding over costly blunders such as the Port Macquarie sell-off and the $800 million losses on the Airport Rail Link.

(10)

The NSW economy has been stifled by your government’s high levels of red tape, high regulation and high taxes.

(10) No team:

You hide your shadow cabinet because few support you or pose credible alternatives as ministers.
