SWEAT SHOPS BUILDS SHEIK’S WEALTH
In the last week of March, sheik Mohammed purchased the Woodland Stud and other racing interests from Bob Ingham for approximately $500 million. What the major media fail to mention is that sheik Mohammed’s wealth is driven by Dubai’s 500,00 immigrant workers. This could be because, the imported labourers live in the desert beyond the eyes of tourists in a Soweto-like township, ten to a room, in houses with no sewer and 43 degree heat, according to journalist Erick Ellis who recently visited the area.
Travelling on the back of trucks to and from the building sites, these slave labourers toil hard in the erection of hotels and shopping plazas that cater for the tourist boom which has bypassed oil as the Sheik’s biggest income. Whilst these $10 a week slaves from the Subcontinent do not openly complain for fear of being deported home to something worse in Pakistan or India, their exploitation remains a humanitarian issue for Dubai and its ruler, who now owns our largest horse business.
